Floating Down the River of Life

Here is a little poem I wrote which was inspired by my own tubing adventure down a river in Colombia South America with a group of friends. This poem is one that I find deeply applicable to how we view our lives, our circumstances, and our choices in the moment which can be so critical in how well we float or move through our lives. I hope you find some hope within these words.
The river of life is one big adventure
Some of the currents are calm and peaceful
Yet others are raging, threatening to drown us
Sometimes we hit rock bottom
Feeling the reverberation in our bodies
Or in our circumstances which seem to never end
We may fall away from the flow
Taking a wrong turn sending us in
A direction we don’t want to go
When on the river of life
We have decisions to make
But ultimately the current is in control
The more we actively choose
The current that suits our particular needs
The more likely we are to flow in greater peacefulness
But, we will hit heavy currents
Requiring us to surrender and ride the wave
Trusting that our best friend is rightly guiding us
Sometimes we will lose our way
Requiring us to turn to our wise guides
Who can help us get back in the flow
It is in that combination
Of active choice and sweet surrender
That the greatest adventure can be realized
We must not remain passive,
Otherwise the river threatens
To overcome us and drown us
We must not try to fully control
Otherwise we will find ourselves
Exhausted as we rage against the current
We must do our part
While also relying on our stalwart guides
Offering gratitude for the amazing adventure of life
